“I Didn’t See Potential” – Kcee Reveals Why He Refused to Sign Flavour
Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has shed light on the long-running rumors of a rift with his colleague Flavour, revealing that he once refused to offer Flavour a record deal because he “didn’t see potentials in him then.”
Dependable NG reports that the two artists recently engaged in a public social media skirmish in 2024 after Flavour posted a cryptic shade online about someone allegedly copying his musical style. Kcee publicly responded, warning Flavour to stop trying to gatekeep Igbo cultural music and asserting that he was a veteran in the industry.
Speaking in a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, the Limpopo crooner disclosed that his first encounter with Flavour was years ago when popular talent manager Soso Soberekon brought Flavour to him for a record deal.
Kcee explained: “I came into the music industry before Flavour. Soso Soberekon brought him to me years ago to sign to my record label… I told Soso I can’t sign Flavour because I didn’t see potentials in him at that time. It wasn’t because I have something against him.”
He stated that he was already financially established before Flavour even came to Lagos, a fact he believes contributes to the current dynamic.
Kcee, however, believes their current rift is not due to the past rejection but rather a case of “superiority complex.” He emphasized that some of his colleagues underrate him because he does not brag about his talent.
He added: “Till now, I don’t understand the reason for his beef with me, especially that incident where he alleged that someone was coping him… A lot of my colleagues underrate my talent and my humility also contributed to that. Because I don’t brag. I don’t need it. But as I always say, time will always prove them wrong. My work always prove every doubter wrong.”
