Peseiro: England Snub Pushed Lookman to Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles head coach José Peseiro has revealed that Ademola Lookman’s emotional decision to switch international allegiance from England to Nigeria was driven by disappointment after repeated omissions from the Three Lions’ senior squad. Born in London to Nigerian parents, Lookman had represented England with distinction from the Under-19 level through to the Under-21s, even winning the Under-20 World Cup in 2017. However, the anticipated call-up to the senior side never materialized, leading to a crucial turning point in the winger’s career.

Speaking about the former African Footballer of the Year, who recently completed a high-profile transfer to Atlético Madrid, Peseiro explained that the constant overlooked feeling deeply affected Lookman. Despite his impressive progression through the youth ranks and his consistent performances at the club level, the technical staff in England continually ignored him.

“For Lookman, it’s a challenge, and it’s a big moment in his career because now he’s reached one of the top clubs in Europe,” Peseiro told Marca. “He can keep showing England that they made a mistake by not picking him for the senior team.”

Peseiro recalled how Lookman struggled to understand why his promising start with England did not lead to senior international recognition. The player frequently expressed his sadness and confusion during conversations with the Portuguese tactician, particularly after he was frozen out of the squad following his move up to the Under-21s.

Lookman ultimately committed to the Super Eagles before Peseiro took charge, embracing the opportunity to represent his parents’ homeland. Since making the switch, he has become a cornerstone of the Nigerian team, contributing directly to 11 goals in his 13 international appearances, scoring six and providing five assists.

The decision has proven to be a masterstroke for both Lookman and Nigeria, with the winger transforming into one of Africa’s most formidable attackers. Peseiro believes this setback in his youth was the catalyst for Lookman to explode onto the global stage, solidifying his reputation as a top-tier footballer.
