The historic town of Argungu in Kebbi State erupted in vibrant energy on Saturday as the 2026 Argungu International Fishing Festival commenced at the Mata Fada fishing arena. Tens of thousands of spectators, tourists, and culture enthusiasts converged on the scene, eager to witness a cultural spectacle that blends deep-rooted tradition with competitive spirit. However, the anticipated calm of the opening was swiftly replaced by high drama shortly after noon when the event descended into unexpected chaos.

Anticipation reached a fever pitch as roughly 40,000 registered fishermen awaited the traditional signal to enter the river. In a sudden, overwhelming surge, a vast number of these fishermen broke ranks and plunged into the water well before the official commencement scheduled to be performed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Spectators, who had secured vantage points along the riverbanks since early morning, watched in astonishment as the planned choreography was momentarily abandoned for a chaotic dash into the water.

The scene was electric and intense, with men armed with traditional fishing tools leaping into the river in a breathtaking display of speed and competitive zeal.
