Atiku Condemns INEC Over 2027 Election Schedule
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has vehemently condemned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for setting February 20, 2027, as the date for the next general elections, labeling the decision as profoundly insensitive and a demonstration of poor judgment. The date falls squarely within the Ramadan fasting period, which is scheduled to run from February 7 to March 8, 2027. Atiku argued that conducting critical national polls during this sacred season for Nigerian Muslims could significantly hinder voter turnout and undermine the inclusivity of the electoral process.
In a scathing statement issued on Saturday via his official 𝕏 handle, the former Vice President emphasized that elections are national exercises demanding maximum participation, physical endurance, and collective focus, all of which could be compromised during Ramadan. He accused INEC of lacking sensitivity to Nigeria’s complex socio-religious realities, asserting that such crucial timing requires foresight and respect for the diverse religious practices of citizens. Atiku questioned the electoral umpire’s competence, suggesting that a failure to manage simple scheduling matters raises severe doubts about its ability to deliver free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.
Atiku called for an urgent reconsideration of the announced date to ensure that all eligible voters can participate without hindrance, highlighting that inclusive planning is fundamental to the legitimacy of democratic outcomes in Nigeria.
