The All Progressives Congress has emphatically assured its members and the Nigerian public that its upcoming ward congresses and national convention will adhere strictly to principles of transparency, credibility, and robust internal democracy. Bala Ibrahim, the party’s Director of Publicity, issued this confident statement on Sunday, asserting that the meticulously planned processes are designed to bolster party unity and ensure maximum grassroots participation across the nation.

Scheduled to begin with ward congresses on February 18 and culminating in a national convention from March 27 to March 28, the APC leadership maintains it is fully prepared for a peaceful and organized exercise. Ibrahim emphasized that the party has a proven track record of conducting seamless internal elections and expects this cycle to further showcase its progressive nature and organizational strength to the rest of the political landscape.

However, opposition parties have quickly countered this optimism with stern warnings, predicting that the internal contests could expose deep-seated fault lines and competing interests within the ruling party. Ini Ememobong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, argued that the APC’s heavy reliance on recent defections has created a volatile mix of members lacking genuine commitment. Ememobong warned that these congresses could mark the beginning of significant internal challenges that the APC might struggle to overcome.

Similarly, Oladipo Johnson, speaking for the New Nigeria Peoples Party, noted that the APC’s continued accommodation of diverse interests through various political pressures will make managing the outcome of these congresses complex. Johnson predicted that the party would inevitably face internal crises when unable to satisfy all stakeholders with key positions, asserting that the processes will be a major test of the party’s stability.
