Angela Okorie Stuck in Suleja Despite Meeting Bail

Nollywood actress and singer Angela Okorie will spend the remainder of the weekend at the Suleja Correctional Centre, despite a Federal High Court in Abuja granting her bail on Friday. The actress, who has been at the center of a high-profile legal battle involving allegations of cyberstalking and criminal defamation, successfully met her bail conditions, but administrative timing has stalled her walk to freedom.

Justice Emeka Nwite admitted the actress to bail in the sum of ₦5 million on January 30, 2026. The court mandated that Okorie provide one surety in like sum, who must be a Grade Level 13 civil servant. Furthermore, the surety is required to submit their appointment and last promotion letters, along with an affidavit of means, and have their residence verified by the court registrar.

The push for her release was championed by a coalition of public figures and activists, including former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore and filmmaker Stanley Ontop. Despite their efforts to clear the paperwork by Friday afternoon, the processing was reportedly completed after official court hours, leaving the correctional facility unable to process her exit before the weekend shutdown.

Stanley Ontop, who has been vocal about the case on social media, confirmed the development via his Instagram story, explaining that the timing was the only remaining hurdle. He assured fans and well-wishers that since all conditions had been perfected, the actress is expected to be released on Monday morning once administrative offices reopen.

Okorie’s legal troubles stem from a seven-count amended charge filed by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre. The charges allege that between 2024 and 2025, she used her social media platforms to transmit offensive and threatening messages targeting fellow actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie. The prosecution claims these posts, which included inflammatory remarks about Johnson and her family, violated the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.

The actress pleaded not guilty to all counts during her re-arraignment. Her defense counsel, Ernest Nwoye, argued that his client is a responsible citizen who has no intention of evading trial. While the prosecution opposed the bail, citing her alleged failure to honor previous administrative invitations, Justice Nwite ruled that there was no concrete evidence to suggest she would jump bail.

This legal saga follows a long-standing and very public feud between the two Nollywood stars. Although Okorie had previously issued a public apology to Johnson, the matter escalated into a criminal complaint, leading to Okorie’s arrest in Lagos and her subsequent transfer to Abuja for trial.

As the actress waits for Monday’s release, her management continues to maintain her innocence, describing the remand as a procedural step rather than a conviction. The substantive trial for the cyberstalking charges is scheduled to commence on March 23, 2026.
