Fayemi Dismisses Rumors of Secret Meeting With Kwankwaso
Former Governor of Ekiti State and immediate past Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has categorically denied social media reports claiming he held a closed-door political meeting with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The rebuttal, issued on Thursday through Ahmad Sajoh, Head of the Fayemi Media Office, described the viral claims as “entirely untrue” and a mischievous attempt to politicize a routine social acquaintance between two long-standing colleagues.
The controversy was ignited by a post on the social media platform X, which alleged that the two political heavyweights had met privately at Fayemi’s residence in Abuja to plot a political course. The post was accompanied by a video clip showing both men exchanging warm pleasantries and engaging in conversation. However, Fayemi’s team was quick to clarify that the video in question is an old recording being recycled out of context to mislead the public and stir unnecessary political speculation.
In a move to set the record straight, Fayemi revealed that he and the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have only crossed paths once in the last year. That meeting, according to the statement, took place in a very public setting during the book launch of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN. Fayemi emphasized that there has been no private, closed-door engagement between them, contrary to the narrative being pushed by “shadow-chasers” on the internet.
Dr. Fayemi’s team further cautioned Nigerians against the growing trend of attaching partisan motives to every social interaction among public figures. The former governor noted that his network of friends and associates spans the entire Nigerian political spectrum, including those who are not involved in partisan politics at all. He stressed that a personal friendship, built on mutual respect and a shared concern for the country’s progress, should not be conflated with a secret political alliance or a merger plot.
While Fayemi remains a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), he reaffirmed his commitment to “principled engagement” and responsible public discourse. He urged the public to ignore the fabricated report and focus instead on the pressing developmental issues facing the country. By debunking the rumor so swiftly, Fayemi appears keen on maintaining a clear distinction between his personal relationships and his formal political trajectory as the 2027 election cycle begins to draw closer.
The statement concluded with a call for national unity and bridge-building, urging citizens to resist the “mischievous interpretations” of social media influencers who thrive on disinformation. As the political landscape remains highly fluid, this clarification serves as a reminder that in the digital age, a simple greeting from the past can easily be weaponized into a headline for the future. Fayemi’s firm “no” to the rumors suggests he is not ready to let recycled footage define his current political standing.
