IShowSpeed Prioritizes African Culture Over Influencer Collaborations

Global streaming phenomenon IShowSpeed has finally addressed the growing chatter regarding his decision to bypass collaborations with local content creators during his high-octane tour of the African continent. As the 28-day “Speed Does Africa” tour sweeps through 20 countries, the YouTuber clarified that his mission is centered on cultural immersion rather than traditional influencer networking. Speaking to fans during his recent stop in Lagos, the 21-year-old explained that the project was specifically designed to provide a global window into the everyday lives, street talents, and hidden gems of Africa that rarely receive mainstream media attention.

The clarification follows a series of viral and somewhat chaotic attempts by local influencers to grab the streamer’s attention, most notably from the Nigerian TikTok star Peller. The young creator was seen in multiple videos attempting to intercept IShowSpeed’s security-heavy convoy, at one point even chasing the vehicles on horseback and pleading for a collaboration. Despite Peller’s high-energy pursuit and claims of being a “big streamer” himself, he was consistently held back by IShowSpeed’s robust security detail, led by his personal bodyguards.

Addressing the friction, IShowSpeed noted that his itinerary is managed by a dedicated team with a strict, pre-planned timetable that leaves almost no room for spontaneous meetups. He emphasized that the tour’s primary goal is to empower those who do not already have a platform. “A lot of the people complaining already have audiences,” the streamer remarked, pointing out that his focus remains on street performers and local artists who have “real talent” but zero global exposure. To him, canceling a pre-arranged cultural visit with a local community to accommodate a fellow influencer would be a breach of respect toward his hosts.

The Lagos leg of the tour was particularly historic, as IShowSpeed celebrated hitting the 50-million-subscriber milestone on his 21st birthday while stuck in the city’s legendary traffic. Surrounded by a sea of fans, he celebrated the achievement with a birthday cake atop a car, an image that quickly became one of the defining moments of the tour. While he did briefly link up with Nigerian “robot girl” creator Jarvis—who taught him a signature dance—Speed maintained that such moments are rare exceptions in a journey dedicated to raw, unscripted cultural exchange.

As the tour moves toward its final stops, including the Benin Republic, the streamer has reaffirmed his commitment to the original vision of the project. Despite allegations from some quarters—including Peller’s claim that security demanded a ₦1 million fee for access—IShowSpeed’s team has remained focused on the logistical challenge of moving through 20 countries in less than a month. The tour has successfully challenged global stereotypes, presenting a nuanced and vibrant view of Africa to millions of viewers worldwide.
