Nenadi Usman Takes Over LP Secretariat
The Labour Party National Headquarters in Abuja is witnessing a seismic shift in leadership, with banners bearing the image of Senator Nenadi Usman now adorning the building. This physical restructuring replaces the imagery of the embattled former chairman, Julius Abure, signaling a decisive takeover of the party facility by the Usman-led faction.
This development follows a landmark Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which officially sacked Julius Abure from his position. Justice Peter Lifu, presiding over the case, invoked a Supreme Court verdict from April 4, 2025, to declare Abure’s tenure expired and invalid.
The court further directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately recognize Senator Nenadi Usman and her team. They are now considered the only valid authority to represent the Labour Party until a formal national convention can be conducted.
The lawsuit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2262/2025, was initiated by Usman and named Abure and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as defendants. The ruling brings a potential end to a prolonged and bitter internal struggle that has paralyzed the party’s operations.
Justice Lifu rejected arguments that the leadership dispute was purely an internal party affair beyond judicial intervention. He maintained that the constitution of the Usman-led caretaker committee was a functional necessity to resolve the leadership vacuum left by Abure.
If this transition holds, Senator Nenadi Usman is poised to become the first female National Chairman of a major political party in Nigeria. Banners now hoisting her picture alongside acting National Secretary, Senator Darlington Nwochocha, mark the start of a new era for the party ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
