Obi Urges Nigerians to Show Love Through Action
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to transcend the traditional romantic gestures of Valentine’s Day, urging citizens to channel their affection into service, sacrifice, and a renewed commitment to national development. Observed annually on February 14th, Valentine’s Day is often marked by gifts and sentiment, but Obi argues that Nigeria requires a love expressed through responsible, tangible action to navigate its current challenges.
In a statement titled “Nigeria Needs Our Love in Action” posted on his official 𝕏 handle on Saturday, the former Anambra State governor defined love as a proactive commitment rather than mere emotion. He emphasized that true affection for the nation entails discipline, honesty, compassion, and a unwavering devotion to the common good.
Obi appealed directly to young Nigerians to view the occasion as a moment for civic reflection, stating that patriotism must manifest in daily choices and civic conduct. “Loving Nigeria means promoting fair elections, rejecting vices like corruption, greed, division, and mediocrity, and supporting only those with capacity, commitment, and character,” Obi declared.
He argued that genuine devotion to the country requires the courage to identify faults and propose workable solutions, asserting that silence in the face of wrongdoing constitutes neglect rather than neutrality. “Where corruption destroys opportunity, integrity restores it; where division breeds conflict, unity fosters progress,” he added.
The former presidential aspirant suggested that extending the spirit of Valentine’s Day from personal relationships into public life would have a transformative impact on Nigerian society, fostering stronger families, more cohesive communities, and greater accountability in governance. “A new Nigeria is possible when love becomes action,” he concluded.
