Patrick Doyle Slams Greedy Entertainers

Veteran Nollywood actor Patrick Doyle has launched a scathing critique against colleagues who publicly endorse politicians, labeling the practice as driven by greed rather than genuine conviction. In a candid interview on Oyinmomo TV, the 64-year-old industry icon argued that entertainers, many of whom are already financially stable, should leverage their influence to speak up for the masses rather than pursuing personal financial gain from political endorsements.

Doyle expressed deep dismay at the trend of actors and filmmakers aligning with political figures, suggesting that the industry is being compromised by the pursuit of private rewards. He revealed that such alliances often lead to internal discord, with entertainers frequently engaging in disputes over the monetary benefits promised or received during campaigns.

Highlighting the need for artistic independence, Doyle warned that the entertainment industry must not become an extension of government influence. He pointed out that previous electoral cycles have proven that backing specific politicians can lead to divisions within the industry, as well as online and physical attacks against entertainers who align themselves with particular candidates.

“Many of the entertainers are greedy,” Doyle stated emphatically. “Because if you consider the entertainment industry very well, actors are getting fed well from their income.” He argued that financially comfortable entertainers have a responsibility to act as the voice of the populace instead of seeking further enrichment through political patronage.

Doyle’s remarks shed light on the complex relationship between Nollywood and Nigerian politics, particularly the trend of celebrity endorsements during campaign seasons. He emphasized that the focus should be on the welfare of the people, not on the personal enrichment of industry stakeholders.

The veteran actor’s warning comes amid ongoing debates regarding the ethical responsibilities of celebrities in shaping public opinion and the impact of political alignment on the artistic integrity of the Nigerian entertainment industry.
