Sanctuary Found: NFF Slashes Remo Stars’ Exile to Five Games

The high-walled fortress of Ikenne is set to reopen its gates sooner than expected. In a significant reprieve for Remo Stars, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has drastically reduced the club’s home ground ban from a full-season exile to just five matches. The decision follows a high-stakes appeal by the “Sky Blue Stars” against the sweeping sanctions initially imposed by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for a chaotic breakdown of order during their Matchday 20 clash with Ikorodu City.

The incident on January 14 left a stain on the league’s image, as post-match celebrations curdled into violence. Investigations by the NFF Disciplinary Committee confirmed a harrowing scene: local supporters allegedly used dangerous weapons to attack visiting fans and vandalized the Ikorodu City team bus. Security was deemed “inadequate and ineffective,” failing to prevent multiple stoppages caused by objects hurled onto the pitch.

While the NFF showed mercy on the venue, they remained iron-fisted regarding the financial fallout. The federation upheld a total of ₦5 million in fines, covering security lapses, pitch disruptions, and direct compensation for the injuries and property damage suffered by the Ikorodu City contingent. It serves as a stark reminder that while the gates may reopen, the cost of the chaos remains fixed on the club’s ledger.

The logistics of the reduced sentence offer a lifeline to the embattled side. Originally ordered to play all remaining home games at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, Remo Stars will now only serve a five-match stint in “exile.” Having already hosted Kun Khalifat in Ibadan—a match that ended in a frustrating 1-1 draw—the countdown is officially on.

The itinerary for the Sky Blue Stars is now set. They will continue to host Plateau United, Abia Warriors, and Katsina United at the neutral Ibadan ground. The final leg of their penance is expected to be the mid-March clash against Nasarawa United. If all goes according to plan, the Ikenne faithful will welcome their team back for the crucial visit of Kwara United, just in time for the high-octane South West derby against Shooting Stars.

This ruling arrives at a moment of extreme vulnerability for the club. The reigning NPFL champions have seen their title defense evaporate, replaced by a grim battle against the drop. Currently sitting in 17th place—the final relegation spot—Remo Stars have managed a meager solitary win in their last seven outings. The psychological boost of returning to their home turf for the final four matches of the season could be the difference between survival and a shocking descent to the lower divisions.

As the club navigates this period of transition, the NFF’s decision highlights the delicate balance between punitive measures and the survival of league stakeholders. For Remo Stars, the road back to Ikenne is now shorter, but the path to safety on the pitch remains steep and unforgiving.
