Tinubu Appoints Yusuf to Lead Hajj Commission
President Bola Tinubu has formally nominated Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf to serve as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). This strategic appointment, announced by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, requires confirmation by the Senate to proceed, adhering strictly to the provisions of the NAHCON Act of 2026.

Yusuf steps into the role following the sudden resignation of the former chairman, Sheikh Abdullahi Pakistan, who cited personal reasons for his abrupt departure earlier in the week. The commission, responsible for coordinating the pilgrimage to Mecca for Nigerian Muslims, had been facing intense internal scrutiny and corruption allegations during Pakistan’s tenure, which lasted approximately 14 months.

In a letter sent to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu requested an expeditious confirmation process to ensure a seamless transition and continuity in the commission’s operations. The president emphasized the need for prompt leadership action to manage the complex logistics of upcoming hajj activities.
Ambassador Yusuf brings extensive experience to the position, having served as a seasoned career diplomat. He recently completed a term as the Nigerian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Türkiye, serving from 2021 to 2024.

This background in international relations is expected to be vital in navigating the complex relationship between Nigerian pilgrims and Saudi Arabian authorities. The transition comes at a critical time for NAHCON as it prepares for future operations amidst ongoing efforts to reform the management of pilgrim welfare and financial accountability within the agency.
