The Department of State Service (DSS) has issued a one-week ultimatum to human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, demanding he retract a social media post it has labeled as “false, malicious, and inciting.” The demand stems from a post made on X (formerly Twitter) on August 26, where Sowore made a derogatory remark about President Bola Tinubu.
According to a letter dated September 7 and signed by Uwem Davies, the DSS Director of Legal Services, the agency accused Sowore of making “criminal and derogatory remarks” against the President. Sowore’s post reportedly called President Tinubu a “criminal” after the President made a statement in Brazil claiming corruption no longer existed under his administration. The DSS claims these remarks could “incite public disturbance, disunity, and even insurrection” and have sparked anger among some citizens.
The security agency has warned that should Sowore fail to comply with its demands, it will be forced to “explore all lawful means” to protect national security and public order. Despite this stern warning, Sowore has remained defiant. In a statement on his X account on Sunday, he confirmed that the social media platform had officially contacted him regarding the DSS letter. However, he publicly declared his refusal to delete the post, stating: “One option I will not be taking is deleting that Tweet. Thank you, @X.”
