President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to announce the country’s new ambassadors as early as next week, a move that comes amidst a deepening diplomatic tension with the United States of America over alleged Christian killings in Nigeria.
Dependable NG reports that this development was confirmed by Arise Television on Tuesday. According to the report, President Tinubu has instructed the country’s security services to immediately conclude the vetting process for the possible ambassadorial nominees.
The announcement of new ambassadors is widely seen as a response to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic footing, particularly following US President Donald Trump’s recent declaration that Nigeria is a “Country of Particular Concern” and his subsequent threat of potential military action if the Nigerian government fails to adequately address the alleged Christian killings. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) had recently linked Nigeria’s weakened international standing to the administration’s “diplomatic negligence,” specifically pointing to the prolonged absence of ambassadors in key countries.
The Federal Government had previously clarified that the list of ambassadorial nominees is ready. Recall that earlier this year, reports circulated suggesting that the list included prominent political figures such as former federal lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani, ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri, and former governors of Abia and Enugu States, Okezie Ikpeazu and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, among others. The expedited announcement is anticipated to fill critical diplomatic vacancies globally, particularly in strategically important capitals.
